Off-Campus Housing Guide: University of Nevada Reno

Off-Campus Housing Guide

The University of Nevada Reno is the flagship university of Nevada, enrolling around 21,000 students in the heart of downtown Reno. UNR is known for its programs in engineering, mining, business, and atmospheric sciences. Reno's transformation from a casino town to a tech and outdoor recreation hub has made it an increasingly appealing place to be a student — affordable, outdoorsy, and growing.

Off-campus housing near UNR is among the most affordable of any university in the West. Rent is significantly lower than what you'd find in California or Seattle, and there's a solid range of options close to campus. This Off-Campus Housing Guide covers the best neighborhoods, what student life looks like off campus, and the spots that define Reno for students.

Off-Campus Housing Guide: Best Neighborhoods Near UNR

The University Neighborhood directly surrounding campus is the most popular for UNR students. N Virginia Street runs through the area and has a mix of student apartments, coffee shops, and restaurants. It's walkable to campus and has the highest density of student housing in the city.

Midtown Reno is south of downtown and has become one of the city's most lively areas, with a strong restaurant, bar, and arts scene. It's a short drive or bike ride from UNR and is especially popular with upperclassmen and grad students who want access to a more developed neighborhood.

Northwest Reno offers more suburban-style housing at very affordable prices. It's further from campus but well-connected by bus routes. Popular with students who have cars and want more space for the price.

Off-Campus Student Life at UNR

Reno's outdoor access is one of its biggest draws for UNR students. Lake Tahoe is about 45 minutes away, offering world-class skiing in the winter and hiking, kayaking, and swimming in the summer. The Truckee River runs through downtown and is a popular spot for whitewater rafting and riverside hangouts.

Downtown Reno has undergone major revitalization and now has a solid food and arts scene. The Riverwalk District along the Truckee River is lined with restaurants and bars. Midtown's stretch of S Virginia Street has become a legitimate hub for local businesses that students frequent regularly.
