Apartments Near LSU Campus, Ranked by Commute Time

Every fall the same argument runs through Baton Rouge group chats: how much is a short trip to campus actually worth? Ranking apartments near LSU campus by commute time is the fastest way to settle it, because around LSU the difference between a ten-minute morning and a thirty-minute one usually shows up as a few hundred dollars a month, a decision about whether you keep a car, and an honest answer about how many roommates you want. This guide takes four real places currently listed on the LSU off-campus housing page and ranks them by the distance band recorded on each one, then runs the per-person math so you can see exactly what you buy when you pay for being close.

Begin your search at Off-Campus Universe, where you can browse current listings near Baton Rouge, compare floor plans side by side, and work out what each place costs per person before you ever book a tour. Every property below comes from that page, and the names, prices and floor plans are quoted exactly as the landlords posted them.

Ranked by the distance band on each listing, closest first: Apartment at Blox @ Brightside Dr is a 1bd/1ba apartment at $900/month, recorded at under 5 minutes from LSU. The Villas At Riverbend is a 3bd/3ba condo at $950/month, recorded at 5-10 minutes. 7051 Perkins Place Court Apt B is a 2bd/1.5ba townhouse at $1,150/month, recorded at more than 10 minutes. And Local Neighborhood that Quiet - that is the landlord's own wording for the name, left exactly as written - is a 4bd/2ba house at $2,560/month, recorded at more than 15 minutes out. Measured against the $855 per person per month figure that came out of 47 LSU student housing posts, the pattern is immediate. The Blox one-bedroom at $900/month is a solo lease, so one person carries the whole $900, about $45 a month above the $855 figure, and that premium buys the shortest trip on the list. Split four ways, the $2,560/month house works out to $640 each, roughly $215 a month below $855, or about $2,580 saved per person across a twelve-month lease - and it is the furthest out. The $1,150/month townhouse splits two ways to $575 each, about $280 below the $855 figure, from a band in the middle of the pack.

One listing needs an answer before you budget on it. The Villas At Riverbend is recorded as a 3bd/3ba condo at $950/month, and that number reads two ways. If $950 is the whole-unit rent, three roommates pay about $316.67 each, which would be the cheapest per-person number on this page by a wide margin and roughly $538 a month under the $855 figure. If $950 is a per-bedroom price - which is how plenty of 3x3 and 4x4 student buildings around LSU quote rent - then the unit is $2,850 a month, each person pays $950, and you are about $95 above the $855 figure instead. Those two readings sit $633 apart per person per month, which is the difference between a bargain and the most expensive room on this list. Do not sign or split anything on a guess: ask the landlord in writing which reading applies, whether the lease is joint or by-the-bed, and whether utilities and internet sit inside or outside that $950.

A caveat on the ranking itself. The distance recorded on these listings is a coarse band - under 5 minutes, 5-10 minutes, more than 10, more than 15 - not a measured, street-by-street travel time, and it does not say whether those minutes are on foot, on a bike, on a bus or in a car. It also knows nothing about the Nicholson Drive backup at 8 a.m., the lights along Highland Road, or what happens to every route near campus on a home-game Saturday. Use the bands to sort the list, then time the trip yourself, from the actual address, at the hour you would really be making it.

Where the Baton Rouge Commute Bands Actually Fall

Baton Rouge sorts itself along a handful of corridors, and once you know them the bands stop being abstract. The Brightside Drive and Burbank Drive corridor southwest of campus is where most of the purpose-built student product sits, including the 4b4b and 1b1b floor plans LSU students name over and over in housing posts; it is close enough that listings there land in the tightest bands, which is where Apartment at Blox @ Brightside Dr at $900/month and The Villas At Riverbend at $950/month are both recorded. Tigerland, off Bob Pettit Boulevard, is the cheapest cluster in walking range of that corridor and also the loudest, which is a genuine trade rather than a flaw. North of campus, the Garden District and the streets around the Perkins Road overpass swap student density for older housing stock, larger trees and quieter blocks - 7051 Perkins Place Court Apt B takes its name from that corridor, and its recorded band of more than 10 minutes reflects that you are crossing more of the city to get in. Keep pushing out along Highland Road toward Ben Hur, or east toward Bluebonnet and Siegen, and you get the most square footage per dollar anywhere in the parish. That is exactly the trade Local Neighborhood that Quiet makes at $2,560/month: a whole 4bd/2ba house, $640 a head split four ways, and more than 15 minutes of road between you and your first class.

Apartments Near LSU Campus: What Each Commute Band Costs Per Person

Stacked by distance band, apartments near LSU campus follow one clean rule with a single exception. The closest place here, the Blox one-bedroom at $900/month, is also the one nobody splits, so the per-person price of being inside the tightest band is the entire $900 - about $45 over the $855 per person figure. Everything that splits gets cheaper per head as it moves outward: $575 each in the $1,150/month Perkins townhouse at more than 10 minutes, $640 each in the $2,560/month house at more than 15 minutes. Even a three-person split of that same house lands at about $853.33 each, which is essentially the $855 figure exactly - useful to know if your fourth roommate falls through and you have to decide whether to keep the place. The exception is The Villas At Riverbend, where $950/month could describe the whole 3bd/3ba condo or a single bedroom inside it, so it lands at either $316.67 or $950 per person depending on an answer nobody has yet. The honest summary is that you are not really paying for distance at all. You are paying for how many names are on the lease, and distance is what lets you add names without adding rent.

Four Things to Settle Before You Sign in Baton Rouge

  • Time the commute yourself, twice. Once around 7:45 a.m. on a weekday, when Nicholson Drive and Burbank are at their worst, and once on a home-game Saturday, when whole routes near campus shut down. A recorded band is a sorting tool, not a travel time.

  • Get the per-person structure in writing. Ask whether the lease is joint - everyone liable for the entire rent - or by-the-bed, where you owe only your room. Ask it specifically about The Villas At Riverbend at $950/month, where the two readings are $633 a person apart.

  • Price parking and transport into the monthly number. A campus permit, a second car, gas, or a bus route you would have to depend on can quietly erase the $215 a month you saved by living more than 15 minutes out.

  • Ask what rent excludes and get twelve months of utility history. Electricity in a Baton Rouge August is the line that wrecks budgets, especially in a 4bd/2ba house at $2,560/month with four people running one system - and ask about water, trash, internet, pest control, amenity fees and renters insurance while you are at it.
