UH housing near the Texas Medical Center for students who commute both ways
If your week includes trips to both the UH campus and the Texas Medical Center, where you live decides how much of your day goes to getting around Houston. Looking for UH housing near the Texas Medical Center means finding a place that works for both destinations, not just one. This guide walks through current off-campus listings near Houston and is honest about what our data can and cannot tell you.

Here is what we do not have: travel times or distances between any listing and the Texas Medical Center. Each listing carries a Distance by Car band, and that is the only distance figure we can quote. Two of the listings below mention TMC in their own titles. That is the lister's own description, and we have not measured it, so check the trip yourself before you rely on it.

On the room listings and the multi-bedroom units, ask each lister whether the price is for one room or the whole place, which spaces are shared, and how utilities are split, before you compare one price against another.
UH Housing Near the Texas Medical Center: Planning a Two-Way Commute
Finding UH housing near the Texas Medical Center means planning around two destinations instead of one. Both sit south of downtown Houston, but they are separate places, and a home that is quick to reach from one is not automatically quick to reach from the other. Before you sign, map the trip from the address to campus and from the address to the building you use at the medical center, at the hours you would actually travel. Ask the landlord about parking at the property, and look up separately what parking costs at each end of your commute, so the full monthly cost of getting around is in front of you when you decide.
Student posts point in a similar direction. Across the 20 student posts we analyzed from local Houston housing groups for Oct 5-12, 2026, the median rent people quoted was $1,000 per person; that is a student-quoted figure from those posts, not our listing data. In the same posts, 25% mentioned utilities being included, 25% were tied to a specific term such as spring, fall or a semester, and 25% asked for something available now or ASAP. The word Medical came up 3 times in students' own words, alongside Houston (13 mentions) and Downtown Houston (4).
If your schedule changes by term, for example a semester of classes followed by a stretch of clinical hours, think about lease length as carefully as location. The listings above range from a 3-12 month lease type to year leases of 12 months. A shorter or flexible term can make sense if your placement may move, while a year lease gives you a fixed address for the full academic year. Ask each landlord what happens if you need to leave early and whether a sublease or lease transfer is allowed.
Utilities are worth a direct question too. Since a quarter of the student posts we analyzed mentioned utilities being included, ask every lister which bills are in the monthly price and which are extra, and get the answer in writing so the comparison between listings is fair. A written answer also gives you something to point back to if a bill arrives later that you did not expect.
Tips for Students Who Commute Both Ways
Test both trips before you sign. Make the trip to campus and the trip to the medical center at your real travel times, not at midday on a weekend.
Ask what Rent by Room means on that listing. Confirm the price covers one room, which spaces are shared, and how utilities and internet are divided.
Match the lease to your schedule. Line up the lease end date with your semester or clinical calendar, and ask about early termination and transfers.
Count parking at both ends. Ask about parking at the property and check what parking costs near campus and the medical center, then add it to your monthly total.
